Therefore, we must bring about a change in the way we think in order to create happiness and sense of fulfilment in our lives. A good thing about our brain is that it willingly adopts any changes that we bring about in our thinking patterns. In our counselling sessions we will look at thought processes like these and discuss moving forward in life in a more positive way.

I currently work part-time with an NHS funded Crisis Organisation as a Community Counsellor. I have five years experience working with them and (high risk clients) suicide prevention, depression, substance abuse etc. Previously I have 20 years experience working as a Registered nurse within the NHS and the private sector; and in many community sectors as a counsellor and a volunteer.
I personally have studied Autism at Masters Level, this allows me a greater understanding of this complex spectrum and therefore I can specialize in Autism related issues and work with individuals with the disorder (or ability depending on how you look at it!) or/ and their families.

-1The monarch butterfly, is famous for its southward migration from Canada, and northward return in summer to Mexico and Baja California, This migration spans the life of three to four generations of the butterfly. This butterfly has an epic journey and for me it represents how we can all overcome obstacles and events in our life journey and come out the other end more resourceful and with a greater respect for our own strength and power. It also represents the power of our nature to fulfil our purpose. Monarch butterflies have an internal compass that allows them to find their way home, and my view of human nature is that we too have an internal compass that we have forgotten about and that by getting in touch with that inner knowing again we can begin once again to trust our decisions and trust ourselves and depend on our own inner wisdom instead of always looking for someone or something else to provide the answers.

I was trained in what is known as integrative counselling – this means I see each client as a unique individual with a unique set of circumstances and work with what works best for each client.  I believe each of us has the ability to fulfil our potential, and that counselling can help guide us towards using our own resources and becoming empowered to make changes in our lives and get in touch with that inner wisdom. I also have a background in Yoga and use Mindfulness (self awareness and self acceptance) and Compassion Focused Therapy. Whatever I bring into my work, I use only when the client is happy to do so. I see the counselling relationship as a collaboration between equal partners. A client is the expert in their own lives, my role is to help them discover where they are in life, where they want to go, and how they can achieve that and to get in touch with that expertise again.

I have also further training in CBT, have trained as a Master NLP Practitioner and have Advanced training in Emotional Freedom Technique. (EFT). As well as counselling I work as a Supervisor of counsellors and other health professionals. I believe my background helps me to understand my clients and their journey out of pain or confusion. If I am asked what is it I specialise in – I would say the pain of being human in a world that is becoming less compassionate and more indifferent to human suffering. However I also work with specific issues such as Depression, Anxiety, Trauma and Addictions, Weight Problems and have some training in how to work with survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
